Garmin introduces GXM 42 Portable Aviation Weather Receiver
March 28,2014 Friday  generalaviationnews

Garmin recently introduced the GXM 42, a portable SiriusXM Aviation weather receiver that allows pilots to access new weather services made available by SiriusXM and its satellite network.

The GXM 42 is the latest addition to a lineup of weather antenna receivers, which offers SiriusXM Aviation data reception while making even more weather products available at a lower subscription tier, according to Garmin officials.

The base service now includes lightning, including cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground activity, graphical winds aloft, temperatures aloft, AIRMETS, and SIGMETS, which were previously available within higher subscription levels, officials add.

Similar to earlier generation antennas, the GXM 42 offers pertinent weather products such as radar, aviation routine weather reports (METARs), terminal aerodrome forecasts (TAFs), temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), turbulence forecasts, and more.

Data subscriptions and coverage area information is available from SiriusXM.

The GXM 42 is currently available starting at $599. According to Garmin officials, SiriusXM is expected to offer a $300 SiriusXM Rewards VISA Prepaid Card rebate for new purchases with a qualifying subscription. Activation fees have been lowered to $25 and discounts are available to customers who choose to prepay for annual subscriptions with SiriusXM, officials noted.

Currently, the GXM 42 is compatible with the aera 796. Future compatibility with other current production portables is anticipated to later this year, Garmin officials said.
